From its beginnings mentioned in 1086 in the Doomsday Book, East Grinstead, originally called "Greenestede", was developed in the 13th Century and became a popular overnight stopping place for travellers to the south coast with further expansion in the Victorian era through the introduction of the railways.
Sitting on the Surrey/Sussex border, East Grinstead is today a thriving, well-kept traditional southern market town with around 25,000 inhabitants. Its intriguing High Street is a designated Conservation Area containing the longest run of 14th Century buildings in the country.
Yet the residential, business, leisure and transport facilities are right up to date. By road, Gatwick is less than 10 miles, central London only 30 miles and M25 J6 is less than 11 miles. London Victoria is just 53 minutes by rail or 30 minutes on the Gatwick Express and you can drive to the Coast in under an hour. The beautiful Ashdown Forest is only 10 minutes away by car, with over 6500 acres of heathland, providing excellent walking and rides.
